How Do Lithium Batteries Behave at High and Low Temperatures?

Temperature is one of the strongest influences on a lithium battery's performance. Both hot and cold conditions change capacity, voltage and internal resistance.

Low Temperatures

At low temperature the electrolyte becomes viscous and ion movement slows, so internal resistance rises, usable capacity drops and high-current discharge delivers less power. Charging below the recommended temperature range raises the risk of lithium plating, so most packs should be warmed toward room temperature before charging.

High Temperatures

Heat accelerates chemical aging: continuous operation above the recommended range speeds up electrolyte decomposition and swelling, and it shortens cycle life noticeably. Extreme heat can also compromise safety.

Operating Guidance

Stay within the cell's rated temperature window for charge and discharge; if the device must work outdoors, choose a wide-temperature formulation and add simple cooling or pre-heating rather than forcing a standard cell beyond its limits.

A useful habit is to check pack temperature by hand after use: if the surface feels hot rather than warm, reduce the load or improve ventilation before the next cycle.
